Crikey, I'd forgotten all about PICs. Haven't seen / used one for years - I am only allowed to play with PC's now.

Lucky you... I haven't programmed a PC in assembler for yonks.

Well 2 years.

What irritates me about the PIC most is the incredibly dire assembler syntax.

"movf FRED,w".... WTF?

Holtek make PIC-like chips that don't require the paging crap and have an assembler syntax that some who's used another micro can actually understand.
