That is, does it matter if you have umpty-quiliion files on one drive?

No, you don't need to defrag or anything like that.

Being a Mac, it Just Works

(Except when it didn't during the week but resetting the PRAM sorted that - a complex procedure involving holding down the Command, Option and P keys at startup.)
