Amongst my box of bits I had about a dozen transformers.

One day - out of idle curiosity - I decided to try to find out what the ratio of voltage to spark gap jump distance was.

So I wired up one into the mains and then adding transformer after transformer stepping up the voltage, typically using 240V to 12V transformers the wrong way round.

Not "a transformer in a little black plastic casing". The coils-on-a-frame retrieved from dismantling TVs and the like with bare bits of wire poking out.

I think it was when I connected up the fifth that
      BANG!
so I didn't try that again.
