History Learning Site > Modern World History > The Cold War > Hungary 1956

Hungary in 1956 seemed to sum up all that the Cold War stood for. The people of Hungary and the rest of Eastern Europe were ruled over with a rod of iron by Communist Russia and anybody who challenged the rule of Stalin and Russia paid the price. The death of Stalin in 1953 did not weaken the grip Moscow had on the people of Eastern Europe and Hungary, by challenging the rule of Moscow, paid such a price in 1956.

Amusing things to pass the time of day:

1: There were parts being plated for the FoMoCo that were about six inches long, a domed head and a hollow centre. A reasonable weight, the trick was to to lob into one of the dipping tanks while the gantry operator was unloading the tank.
The resulting splash would drench the operator

The degreasing tank was if I remember carbon tetra chloride, the idea was to lift buckets of items into the tank and leave them to degrease.

A favoured way of curing hangovers was to stick your head into the tank and get high on the fumes.

just found this on wiki... that's me fecked then!

Exposure to high concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (including vapor) can affect the central nervous system, degenerate the liver[5] and kidneys[6] and may result (after prolonged exposure) in coma and even death[7]. Chronic exposure to carbon tetrachloride can cause liver[8][9] and kidney damage and could result in cancer[10]
