The WD40 is for the distributor and spark plug caps. It drives out moisture from condensation on cold damp days so you get a good spark.

You can get cans of Damp Start that do the job as well. You do spray them in the air box, but repeated use can damage the engine as it can hinder lubrication of the pistons for the first stroke.

Cold is rarely the problem, it's damp air that stops cars starting. If it's cold and dry it's not a problem, but in cold and damp or foggy weather water vapour gets sucked into the engine and hinders the ignition.

The Damp Start sprays are basically a highly flammable substance that aids ignition.
