I shall proceed to attempt to fix a toaster.

Success!

It was a twin slice toaster with a switch to select either 1 or 2 slices.

The switch was a lighty up switch, so had a neutral connection... and the replacement switch had been installed so that live was shorted to neutral when 2 slices were selected.

Built like a brick outhouse, though, which is why it was worth fixing, unlike the £5 chinese specials.
