This means I now have to go through all kinds of Security Groups on AWS that are closed down to my IP address, changing them all, not to mention updating config files on various servers

Don't use a DynDns, or equivalent? I use noip.com

+1 - he's a lead so can do all the work - you just need to emphasis that you haven't got time to support him so if he needs any help it's going to impact your other work. Also point out that while it's great that the work has been outsourced its just an additional dependency on the project and will need everything to be delivered well before the final deadline date.

And you leave it there then settle down to watch the car crash.

Doesn't your ISP do fixed IP? mine is/was £1 a month.

I used to use DynDNS until they started charging an arm and a leg. As it's been at least five years, and probably longer, since my IP address changed, I just use that.

(Also, I'm not sure how well a DNS name would work in a PHP XDebug config file on an EC2 server. I daresay it'd be fine, but adding DNS lookups to the process of enabling remote debugging on a here-today-gone-tomorrow server just feels vaguely fragile to me.)

I think Virgin Media Business offer them, but I'm just with plain old Virgin Media.

Last time it changed, they gave me one that had previously been geolocated to some remote spot a few miles north of Neath, so that's where Google Maps insisted on starting for me for a few weeks
