Today's post brought a letter from NatWest, with whom I have the misfortune to bank, that started "We know you already have a loan with us, but… {bunch of stuff encouraging me to take on increased levels of debt, aka a second loan}".

Slight problem: I don't have a loan with them; never have had

Checking their Twitter feed, I see I am not alone (geddit?). The poor sod who thought getting a job "in social media" would be really cool has spent much of the morning apologising to people who've got the same letter, don't have loans, and are asking "WTF? Has my identity been stolen?"

On a Saturday? The last time I went into the bank on a Saturday, I ended up dealing with some teenager who accidentally cancelled my ATM card on the spot, which was unfortunate as I was staying in Cambridge during the week and needed to pay for hotels and such. I ended up having to draw a couple of grand in cash to cover living expenses until they could get a new card to me. Not going there again

OK, the teapot has been activated, as has the iMac. Time to crack the whole process of deploying a Django app server to Amazon EC2 using Chef in OpsWorks

I got one of those from cooperative bank today. Only have a mortgage with them none of the account numbers matched and I noticed it wasn't an 03457 number which rang alarm bells. Rang the bank using their proper custmer service and they confirmed it must be some sort of scam as they had sent me nowt.

Mine's definitely legit - it's just incompetence in the marketing department, meaning they've been sent to loads of customers who don't have a loan in the first place

I daresay this means they'll have to send a further letter to us all apologising for the screwup, which will at least have the benefit of using up their budget for the next mailshot

And they'll probably screw that up and send it to customers who do have a loan as well, thereby causing even more confusion.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest
