The one thing I've seen about leasing is go for the base model and don't add extras.

An hour with the CCS compiler and 25 minutes with an lcd, a breadboard, and an ancient PIC16F877 test board & I've found out how to drive the lcd & get text up on it.
As is usual, I ended up looking at the C/assembler listing file to figure out wtf it was doing.
Far too many conditional compiles to do anything else.
