And once I've done that, and made a pcb, then there's the joy of attempting to solder the fecking thing down.

I think I picked the wrong part.

        I give in.

        What is the 'footprint'?

It's the pattern of leads on the component.

            http://www.emtworldwide.com/article....rticleID=13972

            For a diode, it's generally 2 pads.

            For a transistor, it's 3 pads.

            For an IC it's 8, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 etc. pads.

For this surface mount abortion of a gsm modem it's 52 pads.

22 down one side, 8 along the top, and 22 down the other.

Just to make things worse, the leads on the component are mostly underneath, which will make soldering the POS a major trial.

Once it's blown up, I can order something easier to work with.

                I knew that!

At least, I used to know that.

This will be that tiny little gadget you showed us the other day, yes?

Can you solder some little wires to the contacts? Or is that far too botch-cowboy for an academic institution?

Anyways, why are you doing the soldering and not the student?

WHS. Or are the little darlings not to be trusted with sharp/hot things?
