    In other news, my laptop is broken. It was 2 years old. I'm trying to decide which is less painful; calling Dell and trying to get it fixed or coughing up in excess of a grand for a new one (not from Dell ).

        Yup.

        And some of them are USB2!

          That seems a tad unlikely until some other department starts throwing them away.

          The newest pcs in here are 2 year dells.

          Most of the pcs in the lab are 6/7 year old RM boxes running XP.

          They're ok for running the sort of software we mundane engineering types require.

          Under the bench over by the window are some P150s.

          They still sort of work.

          And are hand for stuff that requires interfacing to ISA cards & such like.

            Mmmmmmmmmmm.

            When I say "handy", I suppose I mean that if we ever wanted to use them to run stuff on a long obsolete ISA card, then we could.

                  As I may have mentioned before Xmas, someone gave me a P150 laptop.

                  The carrying case is worth more than the laptop now.

                    <sigh>

                    That was when my After Dark Strek Trek Edition screensaver stopped working.

                    It has been downhill for Windows ever since they moved on from Windows 3.1
