I'm rather surprised at the Wikipedia page describing the 1978 film as being "more faithful" than the earlier ones - none of them have been particularly faithful to the novel, but that preposterous business about hanging off the hands of the clock on the Palace of Westminster makes it one of the least faithful versions ever. In fact I'll go and edit the page now.

Speaking of Wikipedia, it's nice to see that much of my contribution to the entry on W W Jacobs back in March 2005 remains intact.

The entry has been much expanded since then with a plethora of biographical material, but the introduction is mostly mine

Ah, Kingsway Tramway - there are some good web pages about that

When I was last working in London, I passed every day by the only station on the Tube to be constructed (to some extent - the excavations were made, but the platforms were never built) but never opened. To me it's the highlight of the Northern Line

They only connected it to the surface when it became the home of the control room for the deep tube flood gates in the early 1950s. It's 197 steps from the surface to the area one can glimpse from the train
I named that station without following your link.

            Morning chaps!

Just spent a dispiriting 1/2 hour trying to find a savings account to open up, only to find that each one I tried belonged to a parent that I also save with (thus potentially blowing my protection ). Does anyone know of a site where all of that info is held in one place?

(Might ask that in General later...)

Anyway - I'm orf to creosote the back gate...

              Ah, answered my own question.

So instead, I resorted to candles.

At 03:20 this morning I was still getting up and fighting with the bloody smoke detectors. They were still going off.

I hate the bloody things, I really do.

Net result: couldn't get up this morning.

I spent a couple of weeks going through the human parasites and curable-but-not-cured diseases on Wikipedia.

There's some really, really horrible stuff out there.

Especially the STD parasites. Merkin teenage yoof is riddled with them, apparently.

Hannay hanging from the minute hand of Big Ben? Who was his stunt double, Harold Lloyd?
