My mum's back out of hospital

They reckon it was a low blood pressure thing, so they're changing her medication and so forth, but she's generally back on form - well, judging by the fact that, when my sister went in to see her this morning, the first thing Mum said was "Have you got any chocolate?

We heard today that my brother should be making his way back from Paris tomorrow, straight to a hospital in London. My parents are very keen to see him, so I can take them down there at the weekend if the transfer goes ahead.
      Good show...

If you want a dog to go with small kids get a Staffy

There is a reason they are known as "Nanny Dogs", there's not a breed better with kids. They are increadably thick skinned and very very tolerant of anything the kids can throw at them.
Nah mate, if you want a real "Nanny Dog" go for an Akita...

Not a big fan of terriers myself, would rather go for a bigger dog. Although as you say it must be a an intelligent breed that is good with kids - the shortlist at the moment is a retriever, Welsh border or Husky.
Depends what you mean by Terrier. Staff's are much bigger than say a Jack Russell or other terrier breeds and they don't share the same small dog tendancies - yapping, chewing, excitability etc.

Mind you I'm biased anyway, wouldn't be without ours

It's generally the size and length of coat that puts me off I think (I prefer long haired dogs). Do you just have the one?

Yep, just the one. We dont have the time or space to have more, although I'd happily have two if we could.

You might like the idea of long haired dogs, but wait till you own one. You'll be picking fur out of the carpet forever. I hope you like the smell of wet dog cos long haired breeds are far worse that short haired

I grew up with 3 Rhodesian Ridgebacks

That's what I would really like

I've always been around longer haired dogs - either border collies or retrievers generally. They are higher maintenance as you say, but (and I'm struggling for the right word here) I prefer the "softness".
