BBC tonight has an episode of Dad's Army of which the colour original had been lost. They were able to retrieve the colour from a monochrome film copy as the chroma information was transferred onto the film in the form of imperceptible dots - an artifact of the copying process.
Now some chap has written software which extracts the chroma dots from a scan of the monochrome film and uses them to restore the colour
