Fine thanks chaps - you both OK?

I've just spent a merry few minutes going through my flickr photos, adjusting the reverse-geotagging information

If your photos are geotagged, such as by dragging them onto the map, it tries to work out the name of the area, as derived from Yahoo!'s WOE (Where On Earth) database. As it's a new feature it still occasionally gets it slightly wrong, or is a bit vague. As people go through and adjust the placename to what they think is right, it improves the system's understanding of how humans view localities - for example, it initially put one of my photos in an area which I regard as being about a quarter of a mile away from that place, whatever the political map might say.

As people adjust things, the system will gradually get closer to what people think, as opposed to what the database says.

        All very

Still going strong - four friends of No.1 son are staying over tonight. They've just settled down to watch Hancock so we're enjoying the relative piece while they get their second wind...

Here's the flickr team blog post about reverse-geocoding

I liked the bit where they explain why they're asking people rather than just going with the official data:

"As an example a lot of our UK neighborhood data comes from government and local council records (probably). And while that data is very good for the purpose it was originally gathered for, it turns out people can be very specific and touchy about someone telling them they live in Upper Tinshire or Lower Tinshire, when clearly they live in the other one, because obviously this side of the street all the way up to the Post Office is Upper Tinshire and the Fox and Hound Inn Round-a-bout represents the border, of course, Duh!"
