Some we went through regularily on bp and so we used to club in for maize and rice and drop the sacks off on the way through.
They never thanked us and always hid from us, but we knew that they were grateful because the volume of potshots on our vehicles dropped to zero in that area.

We were detailed once to lay a border trap run mines along the trails.
They gave us a handfull of local army boys as luggers and 500 kilos of AP mines.
We layed the mines along the trails as ordered, it took us almost a week.

They never said anything about the mines working

Women and kids used those trails, we weren't into that sort of action.

Things started to get a edgy around the time of the elections.
Our backers were noticeably absent and a lot of new troops had been brought in including a bunch of Tutsi.
We were pretty much confined to the local area by then and under constant watch. we went nowhere on patrol without a least three truck loads of local regulars trailing behind.

When the trust is gone so are we was our attitude.
There was a yank running a transport out of siera leone that used to do regular drops to us.
We got to know him when we started to pick up the supplies for ourselves because of the theiving.
Well on his next drop we loaded his plane with all of the most expensive ordnance that we could lay our hands on and took of for freetown.

Selling the gear was no problem. we made back the money that we were owed and knew that we werent going to get.
some of the boys went home, two stayed on and took contracts with some diamond firm, and the rest of us went on to the cape.

Recruiters were waiting at johannesburg, word of mouth in africa is realy amazing. Real bush telegraph.
We were offered contract after contract (these boys were working on commission) Take your pick
We had all had enough bush for the time being though and left with our bellies full (free meals and drink) and our pockets full of business cards.
              Still got some of them.

Considered signing up with a white settlers consortium that wanted to form a commando to oust mugabe from Rhodesia (Zimbabwe by then).
Problem was that they had no idea of the logistics involved in bringing about a coup.
They had plenty of money, the western world governments had by then realised that they had made a big mistake in backing Mugabe. (The yanks were still backing him but willing to back a coup apparently)
One of the wealthiest countries in africa was going down the pan.
Problem was that they had no backing from the black populace, despite them being ground under foot by Mugabi's troops.
It was a no go from the start, we told them they needed an army not a commando and left them to their sorrows.

You have managed 50 consecutive posts on this thread in 24 hours.

That surely must warrant some type of award.

I have counted them but not read them. Were they important?
                      Oh! hi gonzo, Thanks

                      Award?
                      Commitment papers maybe.
Didn't pick up your post til now sorry.
And No not important, just the meanderings of a disturbed mind
