This should be of concern to us all

This is a bomb waiting to go off!

In plain English, the government are looking to pass a new bill which will mean you have to pay your tax in advance of disputing it.

This means you could be bankrupted before you even have your day in court.

Template letter for responding to HMRC consultation

NTRT have prepared a template letter for people to respond to the consultation. Please alter it in your own words.

Latest News | No To Retrospective Taxation

Some people will say it won't count if everyone sends similar letters but HMRC will have to report to the Minister how many responses they got. So every letter does count.

              Help needed

It's hard to know if the majority of people who are reading this thread are affected or not, regardless of if you are or are not affected your support in this matter is urgently needed.

What is being proposed in the consultancy document gives HMRC powers that allow them to judge people "guilty until proven innocent" and force money to be paid without any court hearing. Could you imagine if you suddenly got a bill for more money than you could possibly afford, that you would be forced to sell your family home or go bankrupt? If you have children can you imagine how this will affect them, when they have done nothing wrong?

If you can empathise, please please take just 5 mins to help us, we need as many people to object to what is being proposed as possible - the last document only 31 people responded (most of those professional bodies), we need many many more.

The letter NTRT guys have put together can be used a template (or even just sign it and send it in)

Rangers EBT Appeal Hearing scheduled for 24 February 2014

The Rangers appeal hearing before the Upper Tribunal is scheduled for 24 February 2014 - 21 March 2014. In the normal course of events, you would expect a decision to be published about 6 weeks later. But given the length of time scheduled for the hearing and the importance of the case, it may take a little longer.

This is an important not least because of the publicity it will generate. I would be surprised however if this will be the last hearing on the matter as I would expect it to be appealed further regardless of the outcome.

There are 5 companies involved (only one of which has Rangers in its name.)

                    Merchant/ ICS

                    Hi Hastagkm,
I received a HMRC letter on the 2009/2010 tax year arising from involvement with Merchant in early Feb this year. I have challenged and asked for a postponement. How did you fair on the below?

I too got a HMRC letter completely out of the blue on Saturday for 2008/2009 and having read through every post on this thread, will be creating my appeal / postponement letter in the morning.

Did anyone else use Merchant Group Ltd / ICS Salary Package??? I have printed off their "we are 100% compliant with all uk tax legislation" email in prep for a call to them tomorrow morning!! Surely if these monies are liable, these companies ( and all others ) should be held accountable somehow?

Also, would love to attend the seminar in London - please count me in (admins: can you can grant me PM rights please??)

New hmrc legal powers proposed - Marketed Tax Avoidance Schemes

The response document will be published at the Budget on 19 March 2014, and any legislation will be taken forward as part of the 2014 Finance Bill.

Getting to this stage: This proposal was first announced in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement on 5 December 2013.

We will be analysing the representations and the Government's replies about the proposed legislation.

If this becomes law, Failure and Payment Notices could be issued in the summer with Late Payment and other penalties for non-compliance within a short time frame. You must try to avoid these automatic penalties.

Please contact you Member of Parliament in writing to express your concerns about these retrospective proposals.

Ensure that you are in a good position to respond effectively to HMRC attack by engaging a properly qualified professional that specialises solely in this area of tax practice. Also, be aware that cases take time to prepare and engaging a professional should not be considered only as a late and final option when you are in serious trouble.
