Scam calls from 0300 200 3420 (purportedly from HMRC)

Just received a call this morning from 0300 200 3420. It was an automated message to say that it is HMRC, to do with a case of fraud. It says to press 1 to speak to someone, as failure to do so would mean I will be immediately arrested.

I looked up the number - it is very similar to the HMRC Corporation Tax Number of 0300 200 3410 (website below):-

Corporation Tax: general enquiries - GOV.UK

Also, I looked on a call-lookup website (below) in which others have reported similar calls, indicating it may be a scam:-

    who called me 03002003420 | who-called.co.uk

Just a warning, not sure it legit or not.

    Do your own research.

There's quite a few automated message scams doing the rounds - not just HMRC, we had one this morning saying BT were about to cut us off.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

      Really? You're not sure?

      IT'S A SCAM!

Think about it. Was there a gang of police officers waiting to bang your door down? How will they arrest you over the phone? Even if the threat was real, who calls the suspect - giving them time to flee?

Will do - thanks. The reason I was worried was due to being caught up in LC19, and that the number is only one digit different from a legitimate HMRC one.

Probably cheaper being scammed by the scammers, than being scummed by the scummers. And less unfair.

Not sure who's worse - HMRC Scummers or Scammers (THL, phishers, etc).

I compare it to being mugged - there you are on the ground, bleeding, unconscious. Then a kindly policeman walks up .... and proceeds to steal you wallet, car keys and wedding ring! And kicks you in the nuts as he walks away!

I had a call that had someone say "Hello" before tripping the recorded message.

                I closed the call.
