The government's view is that this is intended to recover taxes that have not been paid. I fear that describing this as "retrospective action" is possibly not going to be effective, since it is easily dismissed. The emphasis should of course be on the scheme providers.

I don’t think it (calling it retrospective) is easily dismissed. They are charging tax on income received in the past even when no enquiries exist. They are doing this with new legislation which wasn’t available at the time. That’s pretty much the definition of retrospective taxation.

I'm not going into arguing about semantics, but it is important that people recognise both sides of the argument. Unpaid taxes, in HMG eyes, are exactly that - unpaid under the taxation rules in place at that time. They may need new legislation to recover them.

As for the morality or legality of what they are doing, I remain resolutely neutral.

Perhaps I'm being a tad pessimistic but I can't see contractors caught up in this legislation eliciting much support from the public by taking it to the press. Yes what we did was perfectly legal at the time but I don't think Joe Public will see it like that even though most of them would probably have done exactly the same thing if the opportunity had arisen.

I think I have reached the stage of accepting my fate even.

True, as far as Joe Bloggs on the street is concerned we are all over paid tax dodgers and want the government to clamp down on us and make us pay. You will get no sympathy (whether right or wrong) from the public on this and therefore not from the government as it is what the vast majority of the public want.

Raising awareness with MPs. Am I missing something; i thought most MPs voted in favour of the finance bills related to this sorry saga. The vast majority probably never read them in detail either, so I can't imagine many will be rushing to admit that they couldn't be bothered to understand said bills, nevermind arguing on behalf of low-life tax avoiders that this action by HMG is punitive.

Agree, most MPs have no idea about this whether they voted in favor or not. I met my MP did not know anything about this. Agreed that its somewhat unfair.

I advise that all others on the forum make a formal representation to their MP and arrange to meet them at their surgery.

How does this group help?

I cant figure out what the action plan is. How does this group work and how is it plan to fight the 2019 LC?

Al its really doing is asking people to join by given their personal info. I fear that many are put off by this it as there appears to be very little else behind the Action Group.

Can someone of the OP shed some light please?
