There's a 2 bedroom houseboat in Docklands on there for £165k. Look closer though and some of the prices are actually auction "guide prices", i.e. about half what the property will actually sell for.

Sarff Lundin, innit, bruv? There are decent areas there but none where you'll get a house for £250K. You might be able to get a one-bed flat in a decent area for that, if you look hard enough. You're better off looking just outside London, in a place with good communication links like Kent or the outer edges of Middlesex. Avoid East and North East London. Don't bother with West London for that sort of money.

I like it (not) how houses in this country are sold on the basis of number of rooms (thankfully only bedrooms are counted). Surely one room is not the same as the other - total number of sq ft or meters is determinant on how big the house is.

That 2 bedroom house in London is ought to be a LOT smaller than 2 bedroom in Brum, or pretty much anywhere. And heck rooms are small in this country even ignoring how ridiculously small they are in London!

Just for a laugh I put in 200-250K, 2 bedrooms and London into PrimeLocation.com

I was expecting to only get back a few rubbish places; but it came back with loads. On first glance some look OK.

If he's up for a long commute to London there are still some places in Kent or Essex where prices are reasonable.

I'm thinking of relocating down south, where is a good place to live (outside London), that has lots of work, and not overly expensive living costs? There seems to be limited work up here.

Cambridge - tuliploads of work and the local competition is crap!
