Let's do an exchange - send out the long term unemployed and move the vast majority of immigrants to Scotland where they have plenty of space.

          Don't confuse him.

We can ask him about ScooterScot and MTT later.

It could possibly support 100 million or more, given the geology, the geographical position of Britain and the population density based on food growing capacity, the de facto standard (but admittedly flawed) measure of the actual usable living space per resident. By that measure, Britain would become about as densely populated as Japan or South Korea, not exactly places with a frightfully poor quality of life. Although another comparison could be made with Belgium or the Netherlands, which have the same sort of cultural diversity; if the UK were to support a similar population density that would probably give a population of about 80 million.

The bloody Eastern Europeans, coming over here offering skilled manual work in a 2nd language, bloody Eastern Europeans.
              etc etc
The problem with that comparison is that some of the recent groups you mention, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Afro Caribbeans, are now among the lowest performers in our society.

This is the very slight problem with all the arguments about needing more immigrants to solve all our problems, we have done it before and it didn't work. In the 60s and 70s we were told we needed low paid immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh to save our textile industry in the face of competition from developing countries. Of course they didn't and anyone with an ounce of sense could have seen that just paying low wages, by UK standards, could never make our industry competitive with those in countries where the entire standard of living was much lower and workers rights, pension etc. were virtually non-existent.

The textile industry in Lancashire and Midlands is now starting to re-emerge. How? By concentrating on innovation and quality, what we should have done in the first place.

                Population projections. UK Government.

                http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/npp/na...ojections.html

Table 1: Estimated and projected population of the United Kingdom and constituent countries, 2010 to 2035

                2010 2015 2020 2025 2030 2035

                United Kingdom 62.3 64.8 67.2 69.4 71.4 73.2
                England 52.2 54.5 56.6 58.6 60.4 62.1
                Wales 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.2 3.3 3.4
                Scotland 5.2 5.4 5.5 5.6 5.7 5.8
                Northern Ireland 1.8 1.9 1.9 2.0 2.0 2.0
The Population of this country will rise from about 65 million to 73 million by 2035.

The Population of England is expected to rise by about 10 million in that time period.

Where will all these people live? How can we afford all the new schools and hospitals needed? We are a trillion pounds in debt already.

73 million is still well within the limits that Britain's available space and economic potential impose. It is a valid question whether governments will be smart enough to plan for population growth, and given the currently popular idea that we can try against the evidence to keep people out, I guess that planning is unlikely to happen.

This issue is mainly caused by people living too long so if we kill of old people the problem would be solved....
