London has the greatest extremes of wealth in the UK. It is rich but that wealth is disproportionately owned by a wealthy minority which does include many wealthy foreigners. However, inner London is the most deprived part of the UK. There is a higher percentage of households on low income in London than in the rest of the country and ethnic minorities account for a disproportionate number of these.

Almost a third of people receiving homelessness support in London are foreign nationals, they cost the councils between £25 million and £35 million a year.

I think that is pretty much as taken but as this is a thread about Farage and the UKIP we should look at a set of figures produced from one of the links above:

Within this, there are big variations by ethnic group. More specifically, the proportion of people who live in low-income households is:

20% for White people.
30% for Indians and Black Caribbeans.
50% for Black Africans.
60% for Pakistanis.
70% for Bangladeshis.

So the majority of low income households tend to come from either ex or current Commonwealth countries, of which UKIP are in favour, whereas the minority are White people, presumably EU of which they are not in favour of.

UKiP are OK with Bangladeshis/Pakistanis, Indians and Somalis, on the assumption that they are all either consultant/hart surgeon material or were born in the UK. UKiP are obsessed with EVERY immigrant from behind the Iron Curtain, except for GDR, on the assumption that they are lower cast, which bars them from proper jobs and housing.

I certainly agree that reducing immigration from some parts of the commonwealth should be a much greater priority when you consider the relative contributions but I can't see any evidence that Farage views Eastern European migrants as more of a problem in terms of their quality, (he would be an idiot of he did) it is the unprecedented scale of that immigration, the impact it is having on our resources and the fact that the UK is powerless to do anything about it that rightly concerns him.

The problem with the comparison of EU with commonwealth immigration is that it oversimplifies things. Yes, immigration from many Commonwealth countries has been a disaster but Indians in the UK do come out well, better than white Brits on some measures. Some EU migrants eg Poles, Hungarians, (ignoring the pressure of shear numbers and the fact that they don't actually do anything measurable for the rest of us) are ok too , but we should not have to take in people from the likes of Romania or Lithuania without proper checks on individuals.

Actually I'm a little bit confused here. A little while ago the UKIP brought in a woman called Marta Andreasen as their new 'golden girl', their 'Sarah Palin', she even became their treasurer and she has had a pretty good career if you look at her website and other links on the web. She had a public falling out with Farage and is now a Conservative MEP and was employed by the European Commission as Chief Accountant. What confuses me is that she is an Argentinian born Spaniard and I can't actually find out what country she is a citizen of, nor where she lives. Is she an immigrant? Just interested, more fodder for anyone who cares...

When asked about this at the London hustings Marta airily replied she was 'addressing' this issue. Some people I spoke to afterwards interpreted this (possibly cynically, but in the light of recent developments perhaps not) as roughly meaning ' if I get a high place on the list I will find an accommodation address in the UK for the minimum time necessary to meet Elcom criteria'.

"Where is Marta living at present? Has anybody seen her at her London address recently? Where does her husband live? Has he ever declared an address in London as his residence? If not, is Marta divorced or separated? It is a strange relationship where a husband believes himself to be resident in Spain and his wife believes herself to be resident in the UK (all the overseas contractors I know are either colocated overseas with their spouses or are resident in the UK for tax purposes). UKIP, British jobs for British workers, has an ethnic Danish MEP born in Argentina and currently holding Spanish citizenship employing a Dutch researcher in Brussels who doesn't yet visit the UK on her behalf. As her constituent I do not feel she properly represents my interests having no real connection with my constituency (London isn't in the SE region for electoral purposes) or my country.
