Hmm, sounds very plausible. Also, it might explain why he took the plane up to 40,000 feet - Not to knock out the passengers, as hijack theorists would have it, but to try and deprive the fire of oxygen and cool it down in the jet stream.

The author wasn't suggesting the pilot's sandwich box, or something inside the plane, suddenly burst into flames. Obviously low external oxygen and temperature would be useless in that event.

He was proposing a tire fire, i.e. outside the plane (assuming the pilot could lower the landing gear).
