That it isn't that hard for someone with half.a.clue using the conveniently labelled.button? While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.' -
The other pilot might have a gun put to his head to encourage him turn a blind eye on what's going on ...Originally posted by mudskipper View Post"So it is highly unlikely one could do it without the other noticing."Comment

No. You need to know which fuses to pull and in which sequence without disabling something vital. Avionics is far from simple.Originally posted by doodab View PostThat it isn't that hard for someone with half.a.clue using the conveniently labelled.button?
If you want I know a guy who knows a guy that I can pose this question to who can give a definitive answer, but I'm happy enough with "it's above the normal pilot's paygrade".Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.Comment

Apparently someone figured it out though. Not to mention it wouldn't be too taxing to smuggle a crib sheet onboard. So overall, not that hard...Originally posted by suityou01 View PostNo. You need to know which fuses to pull and in which sequence without disabling something vital. Avionics is far from simple.

oh dear, the more senior pilot was apparently an accomplished electronics enthusiast, doesn't mean he actually did it but ....Originally posted by suityou01 View PostNo. You need to know which fuses to pull and in which sequence without disabling something vital. Avionics is far from simple.

My theory is that either the main pilot went mad and hijacked the plane himself to make a political statement or the plane has been hijacked for a more sinister reason ... i.e. to hold all the passengers to ransom or to use the passenger aircraft in a more sinister way (a logo respray and send it off to a major city with explosives), I know in post 9/11 this would be shot out of the sky before they reached civilisation but you never know the outcome until one tries. It all sounds like a bad movie plot.Comment

Agreed. Would need planning though.Originally posted by doodab View PostApparently someone figured it out though. Not to mention it wouldn't be too taxing to smuggle a crib sheet onboard. So overall, not that hard...Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.Comment

Really? And you don't think hijacking an airliner would need planning if you left the ACARS running?Originally posted by suityou01 View PostAgreed. Would need planning though. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

I don't believe that you can just turn off the transponders on a plane that size and it just goes invisible to the whole world, maybe to the Malaysians but probably not to the Chinese and certainly not to the Americans.
A radar system of any complexity would cross reference the signals and a plane switching this off would be flagged, it would be one of the first things you would make it do, certainly post 9/11. They know what happened and are keeping quiet.Comment
