The exam paper is scanned and automarked and the marks stored in the database. Attendance information is keyed in. Which means the school need to know who is attending in advance. Which means the candidate entries already exist, which means the computer needs to pair them up when automarking as I already told you the marks are stored in the database.
Whether it is a barcode, or pixie dust that pairs them up is immaterial.

Big Box top RHS on the form labelled
Are you year 8 ? put cross here!
Below this tell the year 9 pupils to put their exams in the box with the big red pink year 9 on it. the year 8's get a box with a blue 8.
99% will get it right, the other 1% will be told they have to wait as they screwed up.
Box on the form marked Invigilator only exam void otherwise - Was the child absent? with a written name field.
You print the same form on the same paper. as you process them then if its marked year 8 its put in the scan later pile.
You have a list of candidates, each is issued a paper which can't be reused as all exams are on the same date. The invigilator spoils the absent ones as they decide its a no show, this can be done while they wait for the exam to finish.
