Its off-topic, but yes - throwing exception is a big hit on performance, much cheaper to return error code and trap it with IF statement.

Originally posted by AtW- in this case the issue seems to be with ball damaged, well, fking change ball then every X runs and remove possible accidental or intentional damage from equation.
They do change the ball, every 60 overs IIRC. The alledged tampering took place before the ball was due to be changed. A number of comments have been made by people who have seen the ball in question that it looked like a ball that had been knocked about for 57 overs and no better or worse than that."Being nice costs nothing and sometimes gets you extra bacon" - Pondlife.Comment

The whole field is covered by cameras following the ball - how can it be possible to cheat in such situation, especially when ball gets changed?
If 60 overs is too long, then change ball every 30, heck of 15 - it seems to me that team with such consistently high performance would not be consistently cheating as it would make it certain they get caught all the time.Comment

AtW - now an expert on cricket
You seem to be an expert on cricket (did you play in Siberia ?) as well as politics, religion, etc. In any game, you can't keep changing the rules to prevent cheating. You STOP cheating.Comment

I'm amazed that it's exploded up the way it has. Umpire has decided that the ball has been tampered with so (within his rights) gives England 5 penalty runs. The Pakistan cricket team perform a sit-down protest over being branded cheats.
Actually, the team haven't been branded cheats, just the individual who tampered with the ball....in this case, Inzamam. There were no accusations against the Pakistan team, nor (as some mad mullahs are claiming) a slur against the Pakistan nation, nor other Asian teams.
Inzamum should have protested at the close of play (as per the letter of the law) and then gone on to win the game as they probably should have done. But as Inzamum is the alleged tamperer, you can see why he flown off the handle.Comment

I saw Imran Khan being interviewed last night about the insult to Pakistans honour... it couldn't be the same Imran who admitted using a bottle top to rough up a ball during a match? How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't thinkComment

Umpire Hair decided the ball has been tampered with, changes the ball and awards england 5 runs.
Bad light stops play and early tea is taken.
England and the Umpires return.
Pakistan remain in the dressing room after tea in protest and then take the field ~60 mins late.
Pakistan and England return to the field but without the umpires.
Umpires ( Hair in particular ) refuse to return despite the intervention of the match referree.
5 hours later Pakistan are declared to have forfeited the match."Being nice costs nothing and sometimes gets you extra bacon" - Pondlife.Comment
