One thing that was unfair is they managed to switch the burden from landlords to tenants. As you probably know, tenants have to pay council tax according to the amount somebody else's house is worth.Originally posted by AtW View PostIt seems sensible to charge for things like garbage collection on the basis of number of people, a fair version of the tax if there was one.
Why should somebody who paid taxes and bought house pay more just because the house is bigger? They already paid stamp duty on the purchase.
It's not like really rich people with houses worth tens of millions give a tulip about council tax, poll tax etc - it turns out many of them just bought house in name of offshore companies and even avoided stamp duty!
Back on topic, that story still sounds like it only refers to self-employed individuals, not Ltd. companies. Will work inside IR35. Or for food.Comment

Self employed don't take div's and already pay NI according to turnover don't they?Originally posted by VectraMan View PostOne thing that was unfair is they managed to switch the burden from landlords to tenants. Good job that we're not self-employed, really, then.Originally posted by GazCol View PostIs it the end of the party?
Lawspeed issued a communication today:
Sky News and the Sun newspaper have both indicated that the Government is due to make an announcement in relation to curbing the use of self-employment as a means of avoiding national insurance, with plans expected to be outlined by the Chancellor this Thursday. The Treasury has declined to answer our own enquiries on this.
Thursday could prove to be a very interesting day.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI hadn't really understood this 'pwned' expression until I read DirtyDog's post.Comment

That's totally fair that tenants have to pay tax that is related to garbage that they'll generate - whoever lives in property should pay it (I am a tenant).Originally posted by VectraMan View PostOne thing that was unfair is they managed to switch the burden from landlords to tenants. Yep but NI is at a lot lower rate.Originally posted by administrator View PostSelf employed don't take div's and already pay NI according to turnover don't they?
My concern here is I can't work out how they are getting around the 1978 employment protection act which stopped agencies employing self-employed workers.
The only surprise is how come careworker and teaching agencies didn't work out how to get in on the scam....merely at clientco for the entertainmentComment

My 10 second scroll down of the linked articles says that this is where a company uses somebody who declares themselves as self-employed, not where a company uses somebody who comes to them as employee of a Ltd. Co.
It appears they will say "You can no longer use the services of someone who is self-employed", which doesn't stop those workers all setting up Ltd's - IR35 investigations would then need to focus on them instead, to show that the government weren't letting them get away with it.Comment
