Trouble is, canals are now regarded as a multi use facility, thus the boaters get annoyed with the anglers because they have to slow down (if there is a competition on, which is quite often, this can be for a couple of miles), the anglers get annoyed about having to move their poles and about the water being disturbed. Joggers and cyclists get annoyed about having to wait for the poles to be moved, cyclists are annoyed by family groups spread across the towpath and children on bikes not looking where they are going.
I've used canals as a boater, cyclist, and angler so I see all sides of the issue.
I'm glad they are, the more use they get the less likely the government / LA can concrete over them.
Agree DaveB. And let's not forget that there are one or two quite evil people out there, like this morning as I was slowly filtering through the traffic on the Ninja, I saw a guy look in his right mirror and deliberately move his car across the white line to stop me passing. He didn't and got a little tap on his roof.
I enjoy moving over to prevent motorcyclists from squeezing between the vehicles. Seriously them twits think its written into the Highway Code. Its lucky I don't own a gun.

In situations such as mixed use paths, there is another method; basic consideration for the fact that others may wish to use the path; no laws, rules, protocols or trumps required. Just basic decency, from all towards all.
Well, try telling that to these Lycra louts.
A couple of women pushing their buggies down a narrow, Unsegregated path have every right to walk side by side so that they can chat as they walk. The fact that they suddenly have some idiot appear from nowhere and start bellowing that they are in the way just underlines the sense of entitlement these people seem to have.
Of course, if this country wasn't so overpopulated perhaps we'd all have somewhere to walk, cycle or jog without crossing anyone's path.

I ride a racing bike, and I wear lycra while I'm at it. I'm getting a little bored of the 'lycra lout' tag, because if I need to warn people that I'm coming, I use a bell. I'm a bit bored of people who have problems with a bell, because it is simply a legal and sensible means of trying to prevent a dangerous situation, and not loutish behaviour. There are parts of the UK where you can walk, cycle or jog without coming across anybody all day. It takes a little effort to get to them, but they're there. Don't expect to find those places in southern or central England, where living standards are high because of a concentration of economic activity, which is related to the concentration of population in those areas.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014
I use a bell and find most people very accommodating when I use it. Well, except the dogs not on a leash and their owners, some of whom just let the dogs do their business on the path.

Well maybe when you knock one of them off their bike you'll congratulate yourself on being such a decent human being.
If you think my attitude stinks, you should smell my fingers.

they quite obviously don't have a "right to walk side by side" with no consideration for others.
If it were two cyclists doing the same thing you would bemoan their behaviour.
If they wish to do so they should realise they are obstructing others and move out the way when required and with good grace.
I suggest we call them 'Pram Pratts'.
just as tottering pedestrians should be called 'wobbling weiners'.

I enjoy slamming my palm down on peoples car boots / windows when they do this. You should see their face when they think I have hit them!
