In situations such as mixed use paths, there is another method; basic consideration for the fact that others may wish to use the path; no laws, rules, protocols or trumps required. Just basic decency, from all towards all.And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014 -
Who has priority on shared paths? | UK Cycle Rules - information on cycling law in England and WalesOriginally posted by zoco View PostWhy? Because it Bally well should. The protocol is what came first gets right of way. So, we have sail before steam at sea, horses trump cars on the road and presumably pedestrians have the upper hand over cyclists on mixed use paths.Comment

Doesn't matter if it's mixed use you don't block the path.Originally posted by zoco View PostOk, I used the term cycle path but it's actually mixed use.
Where I live there are mixed use paths used by runners, walkers and cyclists - if your group blocks it unless you are clearly disabled you will get bellowed at to make room.
I've forced other path users into the mud because they thought they could take up the entire path in their running, cycling or walking group. You don't get a mouthful back because there are too many witnesses."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment

mixed use or segregated?Originally posted by zoco View PostOk, I used the term cycle path but it's actually mixed use.
i.e. is their a pedestrian side and a cyclist side? This is frequently the case and Pedestrians get confused thinking they own both sides despite not looking like the picture on the cycle path.Comment

Trouble is, canals are now regarded as a multi use facility, thus the boaters get annoyed with the anglers because they have to slow down (if there is a competition on, which is quite often, this can be for a couple of miles), the anglers get annoyed about having to move their poles and about the water being disturbed. Joggers and cyclists get annoyed about having to wait for the poles to be moved, cyclists are annoyed by family groups spread across the towpath and children on bikes not looking where they are going.
I've used canals as a boater, cyclist, and angler so I see all sides of the issue.Comment

Germany has a lot of cycle paths and a lot of rules as you can imagine. One rule is that if there is a cycle path then you use it in the direction of the traffic so you quite frequently see cyclists being pulled up by the police for breaking that rule. Another is that you don't cycle on the pavement unless its a mixed use one and then, once again, in the correct direction. All the cyclists that don't follow this rule and come up behind me, then tinkle their little bell get a mouthful about the StVO (Strasenverkehrsordnung - rules of the road) amongst other things, doesn't stop the little tulips though. I respect most cyclists on the road when driving and do my damn best to watch out for them but if they're breaking the law (*) or cycling without due consideration (*) for other road users then sadly they're fair game.
(*) no lights, wrong side of the road, in no cycling areas, weaving in and out of traffic, etc.“Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.”Comment
