It was basically the same way JFK got elected. Nixon was ahead in the polls, including after radio interviews and debates, until TV interviews started.
Then the public went "ooh, look at him, with his smile and his hair. Ooh young man" and elected him.Comment

I think Nixon'x sweaty demeanour in that televised debate did for him. Voters thought he looked dodgy and his polling went down.Originally posted by Ticktock View PostIt was basically the same way JFK got elected. John Major didn't look dodgy he was just slagged off by his own party and looked boring not helped by his Spitting Image puppet.Originally posted by Doggy Styles View PostI think Nixon'x sweaty demeanour in that televised debate did for him. He is possibly the most underrated PM Britain ever had. His party did the dirty on him, otherwise he could have stuck around a lot longer.Originally posted by SueEllen View PostJohn Major didn't look dodgy he was just slagged off by his own party and looked boring not helped by his Spitting Image puppet. And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Pretty sure I've got a copy kicking around somewhere
However, this was a solid guy, I would say thoroughly decent except for him shagging Edwina Currie, but he was completely 'un-mediafriendly', didn't bother arseing around with 'spin', and led one of the few governments that damned nearly balanced the books. He was also a proper conservative; moderate, considered, gentlemanlike, tactful, diplomatic and tough when needed.
I will quite happily declare in public that I'm a John Major fan and I think the people who did the dirty on him were a disgrace to their party and shafted the British public by willingly allowing Labour to win an election just to shove a knife in his back.
