Most of ones in large towns or historic towns are good. I can recommend Münster as it has 5 small ones each in a square in the town center which means you can easily walk between them all and they're all different with a lot of cool stufff, plus the town itself is very nice (also plenty of other shopping oppurtunities.) Linky including English: Mnster Marketing - Veranstaltungen und Termine: Weihnachtsmrkte 2012

Nearest airport is Münster but only flies from London but Köln, Düsseldorf and others are all not too far.

Another nice one is Heidelberg, Frankfurt is large and not too bad, Darmstadt is boring, Trier is nice, any town with Rothenburg in it's name are pretty good, Nürnburg good but ******* busy, and we've had this come up before:

Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

Has anyone done this, and which do you recommend, or is the whole experience more hassle than it's worth?

      Relevant:

I'd be going with 20yo shopaholic daughter.
I don't much like shopping - I'm looking for a bit of festive spirit. I don't necessarily want a huge market, but a nice one with hand made goods etc.
Would probably travel Fri-Mon or possibly Fri-Sun - fly or train depending on where we go.

Currently thinking maybe Hannover/Hamelin - fly out to Hanover on Friday, train to Hamelin Saturday, back to Hannover for Saturday night, Hannover market(s) Sunday and home Monday.

Would be good to hear about others' experiences.
      Dortmunder Weihnachtsmarkt | Herzlich willkommen!

Booked this weeks ago. I thought all contractors did their Christmas shopping at a Weinachtsmarkt.

Dortmund has the biggest tree, I am told.

Cheapest looks like Hamburg at < £100 each for flights.

Will research it, but Hamburg looking promising.
Luton to Dortmund is £50 each way on queasyjet. This does involve coming perilously close to Dunstable, but if you come off at Jn10a that can be avoided.

Booked! After much stress! Child needs to be back in time to travel back to B'ham on Monday, so flight times ruled out Hannover.

Going to Hamburg first weekend in December. Possibly not the prettiest, but seems to have lots of different markets dotted around, and a flying santa!

Expedia giving 10% of hotels if you book with their mobile app - MOBILEEXCLUSIVE10 - which unfortunately doesn't work not using the (cr)app. App assumed double room, so have had two painful calls with an indecipherable gentlemen to get it changed to a twin. Not sure the £30 saving was worth the stress!

Has the added bonus that I can update my facebook status to "Ich bin ein Hamburger"
