    Breakfast:
    Decent-sized bowl of choco-squares
    Tea with 1 sugar
    432 calories...

    Lunch:
    4X rye-bread, 4X cheese triangle
large raw carrot, chunk of cucumber
    1 biscuit
    green tea
    326 calories

    Dinner:
    2 hashbrowns
    1/2 tin beans
    2 fried eggs
    2 cups of white coffee
    539 calories

    Misc:
Another cup of tea and another biscuit
    109 calories

No tiny portions, no salad, not even anything deliberately healthy other than lunch.

The killer would be desserts (not a big draw) and snacking on crisps and Snickers (a very big draw).

I was very surprised how few calories I've ended up with TBH.

Calorie counting is rubbish, It measures the total calories in a food, takes no account of calories excreted, energy expended extracting the calories. Apart from that, the body has evolved to require certain nutrients over millions of years and anything lacking will leave you with a craving. If you don't satisfy the bodies requirements you will need iron willpower to maintain a weight after losing it.

Primal seems to work, this keeps carbs below 50g a day, eat whatever fats and protein you like, you will feel full and lose weight. There are several more complex diets which basically equate to this, such as Atkins, some French one I've forgot the name of, but keep it simple. Search for Taubes, Sissons, Paleo and Primal. This will involve removing wheat products, but search for Wheat Belly, makes a good read. Note that exercise doesn't help a lot in terms of pure weight loss unless you are a professional athlete, a Mars Bar can destroy a session at the Gym.

Best answer is unprocessed food, ie. meat and veg. Eggs are back in everyones good books although they haven't publicised it much, fat is good provided it isn't the highly processed margerines, cornflower oils, etc. Search for Marks Daily Apple and you will be led in all sorts of directions.

Remember most published research is sponsored by big food groups and drug companies who just love you requiring statins for the rest of your life. Corn has changed drastically since I was a kid, everywhere grows the same hybrid dwarf strain now because it is less prone to damage from wind, rain, insects. Most common sweeteners are HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup). Google that for some shocks.

        I've not claimed that.

And Kal has already pointed out the flaw.

+1 A bowl of choco-squares (whatever they are!) to start the day can't be a good sign

I went Gluten free 2.5 weeks ago. Lost quite a bit of weight. Then on the weekend I had a blow out (still Gluten free) but managed to gain 4lbs in a day. Fook knows how. Still repairing the damage 3 days later.

I'm looking at Paleo in all seriousness.

I see saturated fat not being so bad is all over the news today. It also mentioned that Swedens healthy eating recommended diet is now low carb based.

I am the same, can go up or down by 5 pounds or so on any day,

My wife is doing Slimming World at the moment, and I am too by association. I'm happy to support her and seems to be doing me some good too.

I have switched my Large Full Fat Latte with 1 sugar to a Small Skinny Latte with sweetener in the morning along with a piece of fruit or 2.

Latte in the morning was 273 calories not including a croissant or whatever else I got for breakfast.

Lunch tends to be a salad of some sort. Favourite is currently a Waitrose Tuna Nicoise.

And Dinner in the evening is normal size but made up of the recommended foods.

Lost 7 pounds in the last 9 days.

Blew out at the weekend as my son was up from Devon and ate at Rodizio Rico!!! (Look it up) No major weight gain though.

Altering my diet along with altering my training routine to include more intense cardio lead me to drop from 15st 9 to 13st10 within a few months (I am 6'2"). After about 4 months I am still around 13st10 mark although I have gone as high as 14st2 once.

There was nothing difficult about it as far as I could tell.

My weight crept up and up over the years, just due to advancing age I thought. Eventually I could only just tie my shoelaces, and weighed in at 94 kg. So 2 years ago I went paleo: lost 12 kg within a few weeks and am now at 77 kg +- 1 or 2 kg. And never going back: life without bread is a whole lot better, and who knows might even be longer. I don't count calories, I just eat whatever and whenever I want, as long as it's paleo, and that is all I want now.
