A rare piece of good news, Tesco is to divert all surplus (ie mislabelled, over-delivered etc) food to FairShare via its distribution network, instead of returning it to suppliers ...
So when Tesco gets free labour on workfare and they cant make ends meet they can go to the foodbank and get Tescos leftovers to keep them going. Perfect. Just put the unemployed in Tesco labour camps and have done with it. Arbeit macht frei.
What do you want them to do, wrap it all in brown paper and drop it outside charity doorsteps in the middle of the night?
I think his problem is that people are loudly saying they are giving food to the food bank.
However the variety of supermarkets I go to sometimes have collections for foodbanks so you can just go and do your shopping, get a few extra bits and give it to them.

I thought Tesco had stopped using workfare people due to the backlash.
I think the problem is that there is no "I give to a food bank" t shirt.
People with other causes used to be able to show how caring they were by wearing a War on Want or Oxfam shirt. Lets face it, a lot of people give to charity so they can let people know and that is all part of the attraction.

A lot just get on with it, if they need to shout about it then at least the word gets out.

Actually there should be "I give to a food bank" t-shirt.
Then people can stand behind news reporters wearing them when they interview politicians so it can be seen all over the world.
Edited to say: Then we can get offers of food aid from countries like Cuba and India.

In the 14th/15th century, if you gave to charity you wanted everyone to know about it. By publicising your good deeds, when you died, those who prayed for your soul could remember them to reduce your time in purgatory.

I know Tesco is quite a fan of FB - they often allow 'us' to set up a stall just as you describe, even though it has no official support from Tesco.
Small note, spoilable items like fresh meat cannot go to foodbanks. There are separate groups who take that - not sure but I think more along the soup-kitchen lines where they cook it themselves rather than hand it out as-is.

Soup kitchens and the like are fussy about where the meat is from so you are best of sticking to food in tins and packages.
