They want a toy to play on the web.

They have no concept of what java script, flash or what DLL is! Its all just pretty to them.
They don't get the idea that thanks to some epically stupid settings in Windows you can look at file.txt and not realise that it's actually called file.txt.EXE

The key to this is SHE"S NOT TECHNICAL. every problem she gets is going to come over the fence to the OP. It's never been about what you should buy. Its what you give an end user that increases their safety and reduces your effort supporting it.
What are you on about? The whole point of something like iOS is that you just turn it on and use it (I assume similar with ChromeBook), so you don't have to ask for help. Some right dumbos use phones and tablets without access to minds like mine and minestrone's.

To summarise - she doesn't want a tablet. She doesn't want an Apple product. She wants something with a proper keyboard. She wants something around a 13 inch screen.

I'd go for something like the Samsung Ultrabook series, or something lightweight from Lenovo, which is what I bought my mum and my wife respectively.

Ultrabook runs Windows 7 with anti virus stuff, Lenovo runs Linux Mint. Total time to rebuild the Lenovo to run Linux - about an hour. Total spend on the Lenovo - about £350. Happiness complete.

The key points of drive by infection are now news sites and other normal places.

At the end of the day you can judge what cheap is when its your football time or beer/ halo night that gets impeded by trying to clear up the mess OR more importantly when your bird picks up the latest worm and it gets onto your wifi network and starts having a crack at work related laptops.

Its clear you cant think objectively, You don't want anything to do with apple so you will end up paying with your time and even worse your girlfriends bank detail when she finally gets owned.

The problem with the chrome books is a computer is only as good as the software you can buy for it.

What can you buy for a chrome book?

          Photoshop?
          Word?
          Excel?

          Worst of both worlds IMO
why would I let my "bird" loose on my work network? Don't you have multiple SSID and firewalls in your house?
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

At the end of the day if you're buying a laptop for your girlfriend the only equation you need to be looking at is whether or not you will get a blowjob out of it.

She might love the mac at first, but it will wear off. She doesn't know that you don't have to keep fixing macs, so you are far better off getting something cheap that generates regular opportunities to show what a big strong clever man you are. This will also leave you with cash to spend on small trinkets like shoes or makeup over the life of the product, thus ensuring a ready supply of affection if the unlikely happens and nothing actually goes wrong with it.

More or less. There is a home network on one subnet and SSDID and my office on a different one but I still would not trust any of my routers to defend me if something got in though

What is RAT (remote access Trojan)? - Definition from WhatIs.com

This sort of stuff was what I was working on with Alert Logic. The one they had was common and modularised so it could go and fetch what ever it needed to continue spreading. My guess would be it would get into the home network find the other hidden SSIDs then just find a cracking tool to own it on its way through.

My recommendation would be find a better boyfriend that does not begrudge spending an extra £300 - £400 on her when it would probably endup hiding in a company expense anyway

Hang on, I'll just look back at a few of your recommendations. And no, it wouldn't be a company expense

Have a look at the ASUS vivobook s200. They go for £300 - £370 depending if it has an i3 or Pentium inside..

Has a good touch screen, is pretty light and it looks rather nice (the silver one looks like a Mac Air)
