Maybe you should stop socially conditioning her that you have to be socially conditioned to like Apple?Originally posted by Hiram King Of Tyre View PostShe didn't llike her dad's ipad and has no particular desire for apple products or to be socially conditionedOriginally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment

She want's a proper keyboard too.
Actually, portability isn't too important either if she could just stot on the sofa with some kind of wireless keyboard/mouse device. (She does like the idea of a touch screen though)Comment

Funny, my wife has the exact same requirements as OP's girlfriend's (particularly having a keyboard) with perhaps something for organizing her photos too.
Until someone mentioned apple I hadn't considered it, but the whole UI aspect seems to be very relevant considering the wife's complete non-techiness. The only thing that is putting me off is the youngest's penchant for ripping off keys from keyboards.Comment

I was looking at the Lenovo "yoga" things, you might want to check those out. Basically they are a laptop but can flip the screen right over into a tablet configuration or stand up for watching movies and stuff. Quite expensive though, ~ £900.
I am going to wait and see what the new ones cost. They seem to raise the bar considerably.

Which is why you probably want the virus and trojan links as she is most likely to be the target of most of the attacks in the wild. Oddly enough the guys that want to Pwn your birds laptop are not well liked by the usual suspects of porn site owners and malware distributors because these guys now oddly view themselves as mostly legit. Its not good business to infect a paying customers laptop so those sites have oddly cleaned up their acts.Originally posted by Hiram King Of Tyre View PostGuys, can I respectfully ask that you have this argument elsewhere? I'm looking for a device for my gf and apple ain't an option
The key points of drive by infection are now news sites and other normal places.
At the end of the day you can judge what cheap is when its your football time or beer/ halo night that gets impeded by trying to clear up the mess OR more importantly when your bird picks up the latest worm and it gets onto your wifi network and starts having a crack at work related laptops.
Its clear you cant think objectively, You don't want anything to do with apple so you will end up paying with your time and even worse your girlfriends bank detail when she finally gets owned.
The problem with the chrome books is a computer is only as good as the software you can buy for it.
What can you buy for a chrome book?
Photoshop?
Word?
Excel?
Worst of both worlds IMOComment

Chuck an SSD in them and they're good enough to run visual studio, web browsing, playing old games, running officeOriginally posted by original PM View Postmy brother has got a netbook - he says they are just not very good!

Easy to get ones with 8hrs plus battery life too...
A a cheap, portable PC they do the job, if he bought one to play COD then he's having a laugh and they're light enough not to be annoying if you're legging it round the underground
So it depends what he finds they're not very good for...Last edited by amcdonald; 1 October 2013, 08:51.Doing the needful since 1827Comment

Yeah thanks for the opinion. It still amazes me that you guys and particularly D00hg continue to argue as if the person owning the laptop is as clever as you. Their not.Originally posted by minestrone View PostRambling nonsense.
They want a toy to play on the web.
They have no concept of what java script, flash or what DLL is! Its all just pretty to them.
They don't get the idea that thanks to some epically stupid settings in Windows you can look at file.txt and not realise that it's actually called file.txt.EXE
The key to this is SHE"S NOT TECHNICAL. every problem she gets is going to come over the fence to the OP. It's never been about what you should buy. Its what you give an end user that increases their safety and reduces your effort supporting it.Comment
