You didn't actually make clear whether your girlfriend cares about the look of the laptop. That is very important - it's ok suggesting a laptop for someone but if they don't like the look of it they won't use it for long, or in the case of one of the last 3 teenagers I found the same laptop for where 2 liked it and one didn't, the one destroyed it.

These "cheap second hand laptops" were bought from computer exchange so are guaranteed not stolen or borked. They are Thinkpad T series, proper business class laptops not cheap consumer tulipe, one of them still had the plastic film on the badge and nearly 3 years of onsite next business day warranty remaining (so that's time saved not going to the apple store if it breaks), the other one was 6 months old, mint condition, with 2 1/2 years of RTB warranty. To be fair the warranty is pot luck as CEX don't seem to check that. They cost just under £450 each, as opposed to at least £1500 for a similar spec MBP.

So when you add it up that means I saved so much money I can afford to buy a mac.

Oh yes, they have fingerprint readers too, apparently that's the latest thing

I'm sure those are lovely but the reality is that you aren't going to carry one of those onto a client site so you need adapters to connect to Ethernet and VGA projectors. I know this because I work with a lot of people who use macs and have to lug a collection of adapters around with them.

Anyway, to the OP, some of the current Samsung ones look quite nice. No idea what they cost though.

Not really into gadgets but just bought one of these, from John lewis. Cheap as chips and will do what your GF wants.

It's nice of you to force you opinions on her.

              My GF has an iPhone.

I'm thinking of getting her a mac for xmas so that I can have my old T500 back and put linux on it.

It's nice of him to be spending his money on a device in the first place, and then no doubt to be the one turned to if something isn't working or she is unsure how to do something.

His money, his choice who to spend it with. And better to have a vague idea of what you're looking at when turned to for help than something you have no idea about at all.

She's not that bothered really about the appearance, she just want's something small that she can use on her lap. She has tried a 13" laptop and thinks that's about the right screen size. She does also want a proper keyboard.

I see there are some new Haswell chromebooks on the horizon.

If you're going to buy someone a present, it's best to choose something they'll want.

She didn't llike her dad's ipad and has no particular desire for apple products or to be socially conditioned
