I think developers don't realise how hard they work.
You can work hard or you can work smart.
When I was a developer I was forced to do the former.
Now my job consists of looking at data and deciding what model to use.

That can be 5 lines of syntax in SAS or R. Then I look at residuals/graphics etc etc. Doesn't take long.
With experience I see data that matches what I've seen before, use the same stuff over and over.

Helps that Client 1 (finished work for client 2) has me more on a retainer - they're not keeping me busy at all.
Who cares - I invoice every month.

It was hard work to retrain and get the experience necessary. Was like starting again and I went through a lot of hardship to do it. Worth it in the end.

The tool is irrelevant, you can pick up the syntax for SAS, R, SPSS or whatever as you go along provided you know why you're using a certain model - like I said if you're modelling it's typically only a few lines long - often the real work is in munging the data. Some clients assign you a programmer to do that though.
