The train goes to the top in good weather. Which is about 20 metres from the summit. Though the last climb is ridiculously narrow and dangerous IMO. They should wrap everyone in cotton wool first.....

Ah, like I said, not taken the train myself, only walked up.

Unfortunately, I think I'm now too unfit to try many of the other routes up. I could still do Pyg / Miners (just about), but I'd want to take the dog next time, so the Llanberis slope it would have to be.

It sounds like straightforward incompetence by the race organiser tbh.

A mix up over the number of entrants? There were only 133 runners ffs - there should have been a process to give them all tags as they headed out and make sure they returned the tags as they passed the finish line.

Then they could have seen who was still out there.

I really wouldn't bother with the train up. The main reasons being that it doesn't go to the top, and that you don't get an "open return" - you are told which train to get back down. Not done it myself, but inlaws did and from memory you get about 1/2 hour at the station before your return. If you don't get on that train back then you're walking.

If you want to walk you have a number of routes up - if you're going in half term I presume you're taking kids? Depending on age you would probably just want to take the long, gentle walk up from Llanberis - it basically follows the train route. People do it with dogs, pushchairs, etc. I've not taken that route myself, but I think it's about 5 miles. If the weather isn't extreme and the kids are a bit older then you could start from Pen Y Pass and do either the Pyg Track or Miners Track (or one up, the other down) - be warned though, the last stretch of it is basically a massive staircase - my wife and I were having to rest every few flights!

It's not the main event, I'm competing in a landsailing event (ahhmm... 2nd place in the Euro Champs last weekend...) at Llanbedr airfield so I thought I might as well go up Snowden while I'm there.

I'm taking wife and kids (2 & 5) so I think I'm realistically limited to the train as I'm not carrying them! I know it's a beautiful area but is there anywhere in particular I shouldn't miss? We'll probably have 3 spare days.

It's not the main event, I'm competing in a landsailing event (ahhmm... 2nd place in the Euro Champs last weekend...) at Llanbedr airfield so I thought I might as well go up Snowden while I'm there.

I'm taking wife and kids (2 & 5) so I think I'm realistically limited to the train as I'm not carrying them! I know it's a beautiful area but is there anywhere in particular I shouldn't miss? We'll probably have 3 spare days.

Depends on the weather.

If it's pissing it down then you may as well head down a mine.
There's one towards Blenau Ffestiniog from memory, on the main road from Betws y Coed. The kids might enjoy getting the little steam train from Porthmadog to Blenau and back also.
If you think they'd enjoy castles, then Beaumaris Castle, just across the bridge on Anglesey, is a good one.
If you want to spend some quiet time, then my wife and I stumbled upon a tiny little ex-mining village right on the coast. It's now a Welsh language centre with cottages for rent, but it's a nice place to have a quick wander around (doesn't need more than an hour while there, but takes a little while to get there). Here it is - Nant Gwrtheyrn - Welsh Language Courses, Weddings, Self catering Fantastic little drive down the cliffs to it, nice, quiet area for a wander around, with a little heritage trail amongst the abandoned quarry cottages.
Of course there's Portmeirion if you enjoy paying to walk around a village.

Not got kids and forget the sort of thing I used to enjoy when I was one. Nowadays when we go to the area we spend most of our time out walking, or taking drives about to see the scenery. I doubt October will be nice enough to want a beach, but there's always Black Sands (drive on the beach, test your top speed, etc!).

Otherwise I guess it's mostly sheep-shagging.

I doubt that all that kit would have helped if he was unconscious. Wet, groggy and out of it he would have had little chance.

They used to take a survival blanket & a whistle in a bum bag 20 years ago.

But the key thing is that he wasn't missed until too late.
