I've been to the pencil museum. I keep meaning to go to the Space Centre, as it's only a couple of miles walk up the river, but I never get round to it

And how - According to the Wikipedia article on Barstaple Hundred, Barstaple Hall was destroyed by an explosion in 1834!There is, for example, the patch of earth that once hosted the Barstable Hundred Moot. But the mooting has long since mooted its own destruction.
Perhaps the squire was experimenting with gunpowder, or was an early adopter of unreliable gas lights
