What age groups are we talking about ?

You could get a pinata and let them wack the living daylights out of it.

Musical bumps and statues are great

chocolate hunt. hide a shed load of quality st / heroes / whatever around the house. send them all off with a cup/bowl... when they've done that and counted up who found the most - send them off to hide them for the adults.

you'll be finding chocolate for years.

I had a bouncy castle in the garden for daughters 4th birthday - the boys (as they do) took great delight in switching the inflating fan on and off causing the castle to rise and fall - my eldest was perched on top of a semi deflated castle wall when the fan was switched back on causing him to fall off from quite a height.. watched him fall head first onto the ground & was convinced he'd broke his neck

                I blame the parents
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

I thought we had moved on from Jimmy Saville jokes?

Practically perfect in every way....there's a time and (more importantly) a place for malarkey.
