Sign up for LinkedIn - join groups and debate and discuss your specialisms. Go to conferences, offer to be a speaker. Write articles for journals.

Be visible in your chosen niche.
I'm not obsessed with it I just heard about this sort of thing and wanted to find out more because I wasn't sure how people go about it (from something professional/formal to an informal outside work setting).

I made a LinkedIn account recently.

Regarding conferences, do you mean those international ones by companies like Microsoft, Oracle, Symantec and open-source community events etc.?

Not sure if I could be a speaker though, I shake too much. I'll have a look at journal entries.

Thanks for your replies everyone, yeah I need to get experience first.
I have finished my studies and I'm looking for work. If anyone's interested:

    - I make excellent coffee.
    - I'm ethically flexible. Very open-minded.
    - I live within my means, no financial risks, no gambling.
    - I don't have a religion, so no sneaky conversion attempts.
    - I buy the first round.
    - Easily adaptable to new groups, environments... go with the flow type.

Most IT business is done in bars. Here an agent sizes up a newbie contractor.

That's from a hotel website in Vienna. The image name is SportSaunaVienna.jpg.

They are probably a loving couple. I doubt it has anything to do with professional business relationships.

            Quit trolling.

I refused to believe a university would employ someone so stupid.

Anymore posts like this and I'll go with SE's opinion...

It is not trolling, why did he make a post like this to make fun of me? Why not call him out on it? I responded in an equal manner...

I thought posts were supposed to be kept on topic. Okay so maybe the thread is a bit silly, but I needed to know and there have been some good advice.

Wasn't employed there. Also, Poe's law.

This just has to be a piss take.

A very poor one at that.

Okay, thanks to everyone that posted something relevant.

I will stop making these types of threads on topics that I'm genuinely clueless and aren't taken seriously to learn anything from. Last thing I need is to be labelled troll... when all I wanted to know was your experience from professional working relationship to something informal and how it happened.
