It depends on what the person is stealing.

Someone stealing organic chicken or steak is not stealing because they are hungry they are stealing to feed a drug addiction. Likewise a teenager stealing a chocolate bar is just a thief. There as someone stealing bread, baby formula or a basic food item has serious issues.
I worship Maggie so don't call me Christian or a leftie.

Why should the poor be denied steak when the rich are eating swan? If anyone steals baby food they are probably going to spend their dole on drugs and eat the food themselves while their baby starves. Give them dole vouchers so they have no choice.

there were a number of documentaries covering shoplifting. Many of the shoplifters were doing it as a job, they frequently stole to order and spent the money on Drugs.

One episode just before Christmas the Police had decided to lock up their top 10 by Christmas, as a result shoplifting incidents fell over a third.

Secrets of the Pickpockets & Shoplifters - Episode Guide - Channel 4

The reason razors are security tagged is shoplifters target Gillette & Wilkinson Sword not own brand beans, you can get more money reselling them.

As a police officer once told me, you rarely get shoplifters stealing the value brands.

Times have changed. There is now real poverty as all the money is being thrown at the bankers.

            as always complex.

Not sure Mr Patel / Singh / Wyzernik running the corner shop feels he needs to subsidise thieves though.

There is a core of professional thieves. There are some that are slowly becoming professional and there are a few that are desperate.

I have sympathy for those desperate to find food but the majority of those I know on benefits are still better off than those on low pay. Work does however seem to be returning slowly if badly paid.

Now if they paupered the bankers and set a decent minimum wage I would be impressed.

              "Patel / Singh / Wyzernik"

Please edit that before OG sees or he will be crying racism again.

No need to pauper the bankers - just make them work under market forces. And instead of minimum wage its better to create jobs. Stop all imigration until unemployment is below 500k and reduce benefits. Introduce tariffs on imports to give manufacturing a chance to compete.

why Racist? If they are the only people willing to work the hours needed to run corners shops and compete against Tesco I think we should celebrate their contribution.

second half definitely see as attractive.
