Quebec was the one I was thinking of as Canada it being a Province.Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostQuebec
so these countries Goa,Macau are all first world and have healthy economies with few human rights abuses or wars?
from memory Brazil was a basket case until the late 80/90s. But they gave their name to NLYUK's favourite hair style and they have come back well after decades of military dictatorship and shooting dissidents so I'll accept that one.
Note in Quebec the French pretty much wiped out the Natives anyway so its more comparable to America or Australia than India.
Trust me, on average I would prefer to be a native in an ex British Colony than an ex French,Spanish or Portuguese one.Comment

Difficult to disagree with that.Originally posted by vetran View Post

Dunno, the people of Goa, the richest part of India, may disagree with that...The Portuguese seem to have been less rapacious than the British, there at least.Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostDifficult to disagree with that.Hard Brexit now!

I would love to believe UK foreign aid is hitting the target all the time. There have been a number of exposes that showed real corruption including places like India.
Billions In UK Overseas Aid 'Is Not Checked'
but to believe we make a reasonable fist at most of the targeted aid is reasonable. I think we move towards using charitable agencies and tax rebates rather than aid. Lets see The Gates foundation etc supported to make real changes. They will make it happen.
I agree Africa etc are being sold under the poor's noses to the chinese/russians etc and its tragic, I'm almost hoping they have a coup and repatriate the land. However nowadays the bad guys have good weapons the poor have nothing.Comment

I can't vouch for Goa but Macau is a sort of Hong Kong with casinos.Originally posted by vetran View Postso these countries Goa,Macau are all first world and have healthy economies with few human rights abuses or wars?
Originally posted by WikipediaAccording to The World Factbook, Macau has the second highest life expectancy in the world.[12] In addition, Macau is one of the very few regions in Asia with a "very high Human Development Index", ranking 23rd or 24th in the world in 2007 (with Japan being the highest in Asia; the other Asian countries/regions within the "very high HDI" category are South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Brunei). While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

Is Berlusconi the leader:

So looks like the Portuguese colonies ended up better off than the British on average?Originally posted by doodab View PostI can't vouch for Goa but Macau is a sort of Hong Kong with casinos.
I think its instructive to compare places like Goa and Macau, which were next to British colonies.Hard Brexit now!
