Things have developed so people now throw out remarks like "I'm going to rape you" or "I hope your mother dies" as a flippant comment.

    That really IS depressing.
I agree it is depressing but it is just so easy to ignore

      No more twittering

I will no longer use twitter until they can filter out harassment and I hope the advertisers will also stop advertising on twitter. I do not want my professional image to be associated with this troll site

So how far does it have to go before you feel action is needed?

There's a bit of a difference between some anon hardman trashtalking in an online game as illustrated by this very informative graph

Compared with a direct threat after, as mentioned in NF's link, your personal details inc address have been posted online by some lowlife.

There's a marked difference between "I hope your kids get cancer" and "I'll be seeing your kids outside <insert accurate primary school name here>"

Both are stupid things to say but one is decidedly darker IMHO.

And I expect the threat is a crime.

You might as well say you will no longer use the WWW because of 4chan. If your Twitter account is associated with the kind of account that does this stuff, then you're either following the wrong people, or you're failing to block the wrong people when they follow you. If, on the other hand, you're suggesting that the mere fact of having a Twitter account somehow associates you with harassment perpetrated by others, then @Pontifex can't be looking too good either.

                  Which is pretty depressing really
Funny that, I see two publicity seeking tarts.

I see Mary Beard got a bomb threat and not a rape threat.
