How come when I was away the US press was feverishly going on about Kate Middleton, a new baby, heir to the thrown, and when I come back here, there's nothing in the press.

What's occurring then? How come the UK press aren't covering it?

Most (all) mothers who've just given birth do. It's a bit like a jumper you stretch out of shape - takes a while to get back to how it was.
