When do you give up on a book?

I loved To Serve Them All My Days by RF Delderfield, read it one day/night - 700-odd pages...

Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was an important book for me. I latched on to some of the philosophy, thought, re-read, re-thought, and turned my understanding of the world inside out.

Note not saying its a good book, or that anyone else should read it! Even I found large chunks boring and the book unsatisfying as a whole.

I also gave up on Dan Brown's Lost Symbol.

Read about two pages, and spent all the time saying "no he didn't" to myself, so gave up.

Dan Brown's stuff is garbage : the writing, the plot, the characters - all badly done. Yet he's one of the most successful writers. Go figure.

The world loves the ideas of conspiracies and hidden truth nearly as much as vampires... right any old crud about either and you're set. I bet if Brown wrote a book about vampires hiding some lost bible texts it would set new records.

I have always wanted to write a book, but was joking with a friend recently that it might be fun to deliberately sell out from the very start with no pretence of being a serious artist - 50 shades meets Twilight.

I actually had a decent idea for a serious vampire story years ago but I couldn't bring myself to work on it these days with Twilight, True Blood et al ruining the genre, even if I had the time.

Wasn't that how 50 Shades started? I thought it was Twilight fan-fiction that got picked up and turned into a proper book.
