Desktop PC is a bit of a misnomer. I have three and none of them have ever lived on top of a desk.

I don't imagine ever not having one TBH. I'm already looking forwards to the next generation i7 so I can get 8 cores on the go.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

People are still buying these metal boxes that go under your desk? Thought that was something you did in the 90's?
If you want a decent size screen (22" in portrait mode is the minimum for me) you are tethered to a desk anyway, and a floor-standing box effectively takes up less space than anything on the desk would. Plus for £300 you get more power than £600 spent on portable devices would buy you. (Edit: £300 being the cost of upgrading main components rather than whole PC cost.)

For those who are unfortunate enough not to do all their computing in the comfort of their home office, I agree a portable option might be preferable.

Using the CPU or the GPU?

If with the CPU you are spending more now on leccy than you are making with bitcoins....

I know I'm opening myself up to all sorts of abuse here but I really want one of the new Mac Pros. God knows how much they'll cost and I have absolutely no need for it but I still want one .

On a slightly more serious note, Apple are clearly putting their faith in the future of the desktop being based off of Thunderbolt rather than being able to add expansion cards. It raises some interesting possibilities with breakout boxes and racks hooked up to a blindingly fast connection rather than crappy USB. And the Mac Pro has 6 of them . I wonder if you can hook up 6 Thunderbolt displays to that. That would be eyewateringly expensive though, even for a contractor

              Go for it!

Maxed my rMBP with 750GB SSD and 16gig of memory. I can now open MS word without a rainbow wheel, awesome.

Bye-bye €3500 or whatever it was.

How much can you reasonably expect to make doing bitcoin mining?
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

                  I preferred version 1!

These remind me a LOT of whichever box it was Jobs worked on that ended up powerful but unaffordable, maybe in his first time at Apple?

They've taken stick for a power machine you can't upgrade/expand but it seems a lot more "Mac" than the old Pro to me. Whether that's a good thing who knows... I'd be happy with a top-end iMac if I had money to burn.

Not a lot considering that top miners now use custom ASICs
