Listen, if he says she is a trophy wife, then I for one, believe him.

I mean, there'd be no point getting yourself a TW unless you told everyone you had a TW, now would there? In fact I think that's the Reg article we all want to read... How I scored me a Trophy Wife and You Can Too.

I agree that this is not their purpose, if you would care to read my posts you will see that I am critical of the low diversity of a/c in the RAF, which means there are missions like shooting down an attack by a reasonable number of cruise missiles that as you say, we haven't got anything optimised for that function.

I may be wrong, but either way I think that you agree with me, which was probably not what you wanted to do.

Don't they call their planes "she" etc, how much more diversity can you want!

          Women ignoring me

The two women who've decided to ignore me are not the first...

It is interesting to me that the posts that seem to have provoked it say in effect:

1: I'm very happy that my wife is smart and has a good job.
2: This smart wife made a pretentious bloke look stupid when he tried taking the piss
3: Where appropriate I mind the kids when her networking is more important than mine.

I may or may not be sexist, choose for yourself, but these sentiments are hardly violent misogyny.

It does however illustrate a point that bedevils any attempt to write anything for women that actually is useful.

The most popular thing I ever did for The Register was telling the Reg readership (overwhelmingly male) that their CVs were crap.

It was so popular that not only was I asked to write a sequel, but the best/worst of the comments about it was formed by the editor into another article which was also popular.

However, it is the case that any criticism of women, regardless of validity is taken as sexism. You will note that all the crap managers I cite in my articles are men, if I used female pronouns I would get grief about sexism.

The point is that at heart I'm a programmer who has spent too many years fixing bugs writing for people who spend most of their lives dealing with tech that is misbehaving, the most important info is the negative. I could write "a properly written CV is the golden key to fluffy career success", but that would not get the message through because be clear that people miss out on work they want because of stupid errors on their CVs. Since most of my readers are male I am telling men they are clumsy and stupid and barely mention women.

As a writer I get grief about being sexist even when I'm being positive or at least helpful. For instance when I wrote about kids dong visits to firms to see computers in action I referred to the dullness of programming as a spectator sport as "a bunch of guys staring at screens" because that's the norm, oh the grief I got, enough that I almost took it seriously.

I had a minor twitterstor when I pointed out that there is a strong correlation between how crap a job is and how many women do it. If I was a woman whining about this, it would have been lauded.

You could argue that this should not be the case, but it is a fact that most programmers are men and there's loads of offices where the people writing the code are all male, but apparently anything about women that does not extol their virtues is sexism, and where the sexism cannot be found without wilful misinterpretation of the text, it is called "casual sexism".

No, I don't agree with you at all. It would be futile to chase cruise missiles, you take out the assets that can launch them for which we are equipped.

We have a low diversity of aircraft because we have a high diversity of things optimised for specific missions. It just happens that the optimal tool for most jobs isn't a manned aircraft.
