You use more calories per mile running faster although the physics says with force = mass * distance & work = force * time you should use the same. You are a less efficient machine at a higher heart rate. I would assume that is the same for cycling.

Yup, and the faster you cycle the more effort is required for every little bit faster you want to go as wind resistance is stronger the faster you go.

Modern cycle computers have sensors for the pedals to measure cadence, and some even monitor heart rate.
Certainly the higher the heart rate, and the longer you keep it there, the more calories you burn. But this is not the whole story. You also need to know your weight, and this combined with the rate of elevation will give a more accurate measure of Watts/hr which can readily be translated into calories.
Long story short, get MapMyRide on iPhone, configure it correctly (and honestly) and you'll be more accurate than a cycle computer.
Alternatively you can get a power meter. These use a strain gauge on the cranks or hub to measure instantaneous force applied and then integrate it to work out the amount of work done. As a rough rule of thumb you burn about 4x the work done. They are quite expensive though.

Any problem where getting an iPhone is a solution is not worth considering. Except the problem of "how can I best destroy and iPhone".
Haven't used MapMyRide, but Endomondo is really good (I believe they're similar). Available on Android as well as iPhone.
You choose your activity, press start, and it records where you've been and how long it takes you. You can then review 'splits' etc. If you've got a HR monitor, it handles that too. I've started using my Garmin running watch rather than my phone, but still upload the workouts to Endomondo.
