Professional forums like B&C and A&L etc should not have rep scores displayed.
Or limit rep giving to the tightly moderated pro forums

That would mean the likes of me getting zero rep but it would make better sense

Surely the prof area is where you need the rep to see if the person giving advice is worth listening to?

Yup, this is pretty much what I am thinking. But then rep was brought in to give those looking at the professional forums some idea of who was giving good advice. Then it turned into a game for some of the regulars on here and General, to a certain extent, is about having something to do during the day, so it helped pass the time.

If we could get a two level system in place, one for the professional forums and one for General then that would be ideal. Looks like there are some other like / rep systems out there so will have a look and see if we can put one in place for General and one for the professional forums.

Wouldn't that result in the game of rep spilling in to prof to make it more fun for those playing it? Two sets to get in that case? At least if it is a global rep there would be no need to go trawling the prof forums for more points? Not that I have an answer to this of course but just saying.

I've got it. Admin is the only person that can give rep out and he has to monitor all the forums to give rep where it is due. The minimum number of reps he must give out in a day should be equivalent to say the top 100 rep givers currently so that plenty of rep is given out. Could extend this to the mods but they are a miserable bunch so can't see much rep being given out though.

EDIT : Forgot to point out that the admin must be totally neutral while carrying out this exercise so posts such as 'Admin is a ' should get +ve rep as it does currently.

It might encourage people to go into the prof forums and give good advice, which might actually be a good thing.

I think having rep per subforum makes sense, even in the professional ones. Just because someone has a lot of rep from accounting and legal it doesn't mean their technical advice should be listened to and vice versa.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

                Reptastic!

Edit: I would like to defend myself against allegations of rep-whoring - indeed I have received no rep at all since 25 May.

How about keeping the rep as it is, basically a free for all for MF to whine about, and in the prof forums have a "like" or "thanks" attribute which is just shown on each post its self, not aggregated into an overall score for the user?
